Approaches to Learning (ATL)
At our school, we believe that learning how to learn is just as important as what students learn.

The IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) are a core part of every classroom experience—from Gan Hillel through Grade 7.
These skills help students take ownership of their learning, collaborate with others, and grow into thoughtful, capable, and confident learners.
What are the ATL skills?
Students develop five key skill areas that support success both in and out of the classroom:

-
Thinking Skills – asking questions, solving problems, analyzing, and being creative
-
Communication Skills – listening actively, expressing ideas clearly, and using different forms of communication
-
Research Skills – finding, organizing, and using information responsibly
-
Self-Management Skills – staying organized, managing time, setting goals, and showing perseverance
-
Social Skills – working respectfully with others, resolving conflict, and showing empathy
How do we teach them?
-
Our teachers intentionally plan for these skills across all areas of learning. Whether students are working on a science investigation, a group project, or an art reflection, they are building the tools they need to think deeply, express themselves clearly, and grow as independent learners.
These skills are taught explicitly and organically—woven throughout the day and across our Units of Inquiry.
