“Train children in the way they should go: and when they are old, they will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

In appreciation to our past, present and future donors, for providing our students with the opportunity to acquire values, identity and commitment for a life illuminated with meaning and leadership.

Since its founding in 1947 as one of the first Jewish day schools in the United States, Hillel Community Day School has relied upon community support.  Over the years, several capital campaigns enabled the purchase and improvement of the school’s campus.  Designated gifts have enhanced and modernized the school’s curricula and programs.  These donors are recognized on plaques throughout the school’s building.

The school has a long-standing commitment to make a Jewish day school education possible for every family who desires it for their children.   However, today, as is typical of many day schools, tuition covers less than half of the operating expenses of the school. Annual funding from the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester covers a portion of the difference between tuition and the cost of educating our students.  Annual contributions and fundraising are vital to filling the gap.

Hillel has two major giving programs.  Both support our scholarship program.

Annual Giving and Contributions includes our December Annual Appeal, seasonal phone campaigns, bequests and our tribute program.  Donors are acknowledged in our newsletters.  Tribute cards are sent to the families and individuals named by donors in honor of births, weddings, graduations and other simchas as well as in memory of beloved friends and relatives.

Our Commemorative Journal and Gala Scholarship Dinner together comprise our major annual fundraising event.  Each year, the school honors an individual or group who has made a noteworthy contribution to the school.  Journal advertisements are solicited during the winter months.  The Gala Dinner is held in May or early June.  Watch the school’s website for the announcement of this year’s honoree.

Donations may be made via our secure website, through the mail or by calling the school with a MasterCard or Visa number.  Checks may be made out to “Hillel School”.  For information on stock transfers, please contact the school’s Business Manager, Gail Pogal at This email address is being protected from spambots.
