HCDS Walk to Cure Diabetes
Friday, May 16th, 2008 12:45 pm
Juvenile Diabetes and type 2 Diabetes has touched the hearts of us at Hillel Community Day School.
There are two types of Diabetes:
► Type 1(insulin-dependent): One child out of 600 develops insulin dependent diabetes.
► Type 2: Non-insulin dependent diabetes. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing with the aging American population, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles.
► Type 2 diabetes is being diagnosed in sedentary, obese children and teenagers.
Children and adults with Diabetes can lead normal lives. Physical activity, play and sports are an important part of everyday life. Exercise helps control blood glucose levels.
Some symptoms of Diabetes include:
| Type 1 (Juvenile) |
Type 2 |
| Frequent Urination |
Any of Type 1 symptoms |
| Unusual Thirst |
Blurred Vision |
| Extreme Hunger |
Slow healing cuts, bruises |
| Unusual Weight Loss |
Frequent or recurring infections |
| Extreme Fatigue |
|
| Irritability |
|
Diabetes is a deadly disease affecting over 16 million Americans. Complications include Kidney Failure, Blindness, Amputations and even Heart Attacks. Every three minutes someone dies from diabetes but there is hope.
That hope is research to find a cure!
The HCDS Health Office annually sells Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation sneakers in support of our student with Juvenile Diabetes and our faculty, parents and community with both Type I and Type II diabetes. JDRF is the largest nonprofit, nongovernmental organization of diabetes research in the world. It is the only major diabetes organization that focuses exclusively on finding a cure for diabetes.
If you would like to purchase a colorful sneaker to decorate the health office and support JDRF please send in your JDRF donation via cash or check made out to JDRF. $1 buys 1 sneaker. Any donation is cheerfully accepted. All monies collected will be given to Nonna Hirschfield to pass to JDRF at the National Walk at 9:00 am @ RIT campus, Sunday, May 18th. HCDS will hold our student walk Friday, May 16th at 12:45pm. All are welcome at both walks.
